Getting Around - On The Road

Sydney Discount Car RentalDriving in Australia
Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road, so if you are a pedestrian it is important to remember to look to the right before stepping off the kerb. If you are driving yourself, everyone in the car (including children) must wear a seatbelt. The general speed limit is 60 kilometres-per-hour in the city and suburbs, although there are 40kph and 50kph areas in many suburban streets - especially near schools. The speed limit outside the metropolitan area is 100kph on normal country roads and 110kph on freeways.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Cashless Toll Information for Visitors
The Sydney Harbour Bridge moved to a cashless toll on 11 January 2009 to help ease traffic congestion. Click here for Information for Visitors about Sydney Harbour Bridge becoming cashless and to provide information about paying tolls on other Sydney motorways.

The Roads and Traffic Authority has provided information for visitors about how to get an RTA E-Toll pass or RTA short-term tag to use on NSW Toll roads including the Harbour Bridge. If interstate tourists and visitors have interstate e-tags they can use them on NSW toll roads. The RTA has produced a brochure called “Cashless Tolling Around Sydney” which will be available at all major rental car companies.
