Vikings - Beyond the legend

The exhibition explores Viking life and culture through evidence of death rituals and mythological imagery. It describes the symbolic importance of Viking ships, and includes the 'Krampmacken' a reconstructed working Viking boat that has travelled along the historical Viking trade routes through Europe to Istanbul. 
 
 On display are hundreds of archaeological artefacts ranging from finely crafted silver and bronze jewellery, to simple domestic items made from animal bone such as combs, flutes and even ice skates.

America: painting a nation (8 Nov 2013 – 9 Feb 2014) is the most expansive survey of American painting ever presented in Australia. With over 80 works, ranging from 1750 to 1966, this exhibition will cover more than 200 years of American art, history and experience.
 
The exhibition features artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Georgia O’Keeffe, James McNeil Whistler, Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent.

A new exhibition focusing on still life and its various iterations through the 20th century to the present day will showcase a selection of paintings and works on paper from the rich, extensive holdings of still-life works in the Gallery’s collection 27 Jul 2013 – 19 Jan 2014.
