VIVID SYDNEY - Festival of Lights, Music and Ideas 27th May to 18 June 2016
In 2016, the festival of lights, ideas and music has extended to 23 nights, with more than 200 artists’ work on display, 500 speakers presenting at 150 events and 1500 hours of music on the cards from 27 May – 18 June.
Every year, millions of people flock to see the Lighting of the Sails at Sydney Opera House. This year the Harbour Bridge gets in on the action too. As part of what’s been nicknamed The Dress Circle, visitors will also be able to program the lights on the buildings surrounding the Quay.
The VIVID festival takes place all over the city. Here are a few of the exciting installations through the city.
The Royal Botanic Garden
The Royal Botanic Garden is turning 200 but you’re the one getting the presents. Stroll through the Cathedral of Light – a 60m long tunnel of LEDs – and experience the otherwordly beauty of the Gardens bathed in light as they join in the Vivid festivities for the first time.
6pm – 11pm every day
What’s (arguably) better than lights? Animals. Take a ferry over to Taronga Zoo to see giant lanterns in the shape of critical species, including the Asian Elephant and Corroboree Frog. Plus, Taronga Zoo offers one of the greatest vantage points to look back on the illuminated Sydney skyline.
5.30pm – 9.30pm every day
The Night Market at Carriageworks
Everyone’s talking about Björk Digital, but there’s something else happening at Carriageworks during Vivid. On the 4 and 18 June, producers and chefs across Sydney and Regional NSW will set up under one roof to tempt your tastebuds. Lock The Night Market in your diary now.
5pm – 10pm, June 4 and 18
Sound Gardens at the Conservatorium of Music
The opening weekend of Vivid will see the Conservatorium of Music come alive with lights and sounds. Expect daring new compositions from students and cameos from a range of cross-genre musicians alongside installations, and of course, lights.
3pm, May 29
Town Hall plays host to a series of talks from inspiring creative leaders as part of Vivid’s Game-Changers series. Hear from director/producer/writer/photographer Spike Jonze, stylist/photographer/creative director Margaret Zhang, House of Cards’ Creator Beau Willimon and Orange is the New Black’s Jenji Kohan.
Vivid at The Galeries
The Galeries becomes the first indoor precinct for Vivid, showcasing the work of some of Australia’s most prominent video artists via giant screens suspended from the ceiling.
5.30pm – 11.30pm, every day
